Yes, the core of what we call data science is old wine repackaged in a new bottle. Its drawn from several disciplines, as I’ve highlighted in the article, and each of them have been around for decades, or some for centuries.

Like any discipline, they are getting better by the day, and with advances in technology. Its true that its imperfect today and the misses are more than the hits, but its on an unmistakable trajectory forward. That’s why one must be equally guarded about ‘the science of stealing information’.

You’re right that the buzzwords of ‘AI’ or ‘Data science’ may not last longer, but the core value from this confluence of disciplines will continue to stay relevant and it just might be called something else tomorrow.
