The year’s first snowfall, in pictures

We had the year’s first bout of snowfall yesterday, in New Jersey. With steep drop in temperatures over the past week, heavy cloudy skies gave way to a day long of snowfall on Saturday.

This was our kids’ most awaited event since we relocated here a few month’s back. This was actually my son’s top reason to move out of the comfort of his friends circle in India. So much so that he had asked me to find a home with one room full of snow, so that he could make a snowman anytime of the year!

The snowfall was indeed beautiful and it was mesmerizing to sit by the window, with a steaming cup of tea and watch the persistent downpour of pure white crystals of snowflakes. As the cold weather whitewashed the dull & dry remnants of fall with an angelic coat of white, the landscape slowly transformed.

Here is the transition captured through a series of pictures over the 8 hours. Having missed to start a time-lapse by the time snow started setting in, here’s the next best thing, pictures roughly focusing on the christmas tree, in front of my place. Makes a strong case for a time-lapse next time.

Unfortunately the post doesn’t end on that note. Reality struck me right after, when I realized I had to venture out into this weather to shop some stuff. I spent a good 30 minutes digging out the car. Half feet of powdered snow had provided a thick coating, covering the entire frame.

While driving around in the still-continuing snowfall was tricky for a first-timer, when I stepped out of the store 45 minutes later, my heart sank when I discovered the car covered again, deep with another coat of fresh snow.

Juggling the luggage on one hand, frantically brushing off the snow with another and fumbling around the wet and sloshy parking lot, in the bone-numbing cold was another facet of the pristine-looking snowy weather. An experience to part-dread and part-cherish.
