Shifting my base
Its been well over a month since my last post, and there’s been a lot of action at my end, during this period. While there’s been a lot of travel on the personal front internationally and within India, the big update is that I’ve shifted lock, stock and barrel — from India to the US. A move that has been on the cards for a while, finally happened this month.
The ‘hold’ dilemma
The most stressful activity with the movement was the packing, storing and disposing of stuff. I was amazed at the kind of stuff we had accumulated at home over the past years, most of which was sparingly used & some unused.
While the digital possessions and services subscriptions were a breeze to shift or just turn off, it was the physical belongings that turned out to be dead weights. In earlier years of my career, I used to move every other year and it brought forth the discipline of paring down possessions, and bestowed the benefits of living light.
This movement served as a recall of this dulling habit. If we could pack all our essentials, for a family of 4 in 17 suitcases to move to the other part of the world, it would be a good challenge to try & stay that way.
Rewiring the rules
As we settle down in the US, there’s a lot of getting used to newer things. Most of my earlier travels outside the country had been for a few weeks at max, so the peripheral acclimatisation and subsequent roll-back were rapid.
Now, I’ll have some real unlearning to do to, to adapt to a different set of rules. Actually, it needs some getting used to the fact that rules are to be followed in the first place!
A state of flux, and making the most of it
As I reflect on the professional side of this movement, its been a satisfying journey from the simple beginnings for Gramener 6 years ago. Its good to be here, establishing our presence, catering to newer markets and extending our reach globally.
I strongly believe that any major change in the personal or professional front provides an opportunity to shift gears, learn new things and try out some new tricks. As with anything new, this window of opportunity is often limited before our subconscious takes over and plunges us into the comforts of old habits. The bid to bring back status quo decelerates the pace of learning.
This is a note to self to try and make the most of this change, before the inevitable inertia kicks in. I will keep sharing my experiments and experiences here. I close this post with a pic of the rainbow that greeted us on our first day here!
