Hanging gardens of New york city

The past week, while in NYC, I had an hour to kill before a meeting. Taking a long walk towards the venue, on the way, I stumbled upon what looked like a fusion of an elevated train line & a public garden. This was the High Line, a West Manhattan tourist attraction.

I learnt later that this is the city’s aerial park, born out of an initiative to reclaim obsolete infrastructure, a dilapilated rail line from the mid-19th century, by converting it into a public park with contemporary design.

On a cold, drizzling day it was a brisk walk up-and-down the 1.5 mile stretch capturing the sights and senses at different stretches along the line. Here are some snapshots that I found interesting:

The High Line has stretches of dense foliage…

..which offer an interesting contrast to the concrete jungle around…

..along with interesting design artifacts of several genres thrown in..

..while it retains remnants from a past when it was the lifeline of the city

..whereas now it now cuts right through several tall buildings & skyscrapers…

..and at times gets you too close to the adjoining Chelsea residential buildings.

Nevertheless they offer some very scenic views of Hudson river and the city..
